Frontier Academy High School Girls Cross Country Finishes in 1st place
Saturday, October 7, 2017
The cross country team participated in the Patriot League meet in blustery Estes Park on Saturday. It was a beautiful location for the meet but the results were definitely hampered by the windy conditions.
The meet had only two races on the day and the first to take the course was the boys. The Frontier Academy boys sat back early as the boys who are running at regionals ran together in a diamond formation tempo running for two miles before racing. When they hit two miles they began racing and seeing how many athletes they could catch over the last 1.1 miles. The first boy across the line for the Wolverines was Sophomore Jaden Davis finishing in 8th place in 18:45 and earning Patriot League All Conference honors. He was followed closely by Senior Levi Chambers finishing in 13th place in 18:56. Levi ran admirably leading the pack for the first two miles and blocking most of the win. His performance was still good enough to earn Patriot League Honorable Mention honors. From there Wolverines started to file in succession led by Senior David Garcia in 19:12, Senior Jayden Howell in 19:19, and Freshman Baylor Lewis in 19:29. Even with the slow and controlled start the Wolverines finished third in team scoring. Also eleven Wolverines finished before any team had their seventh runner across the line. The Wolverines have some big meets coming up where they will run their best and tackle team goals.
The girls followed and they set out with the mission of accomplishing one of their team goals which was to win the League meet. With orders to run controlled for the first two miles Senior Hannah Ellis was able to unleash over the last mile and ended up winning by 30 seconds to become the Patriot League Champion. Her time was 20:30. Running another outstanding race was Sophomore Sami Angus who finished fourth in 21:32. Sami ran with the leaders for the first two miles and has found a new sense of confidence. She was followed by Junior Aleigha Street finishing eighth in 22:46 and Sophomore Julia Brown finishing tenth in 22:48. All four girls earned Patriot League All Conference honors. Just missing Patriot League Honorable Mention honors was Freshman Audrynn Street finishing in 16th place in 22:57. The girls easily took down the field with a mere 39 points to become the 2017 Patriot League Champions. Although these five girls were the team scorers it was the entire girls team who led the charge. To show perspective the girls had nine finishers before any other team had their fifth scoring runner in. Each girl definitely contributed to the team goal.
The Wolverines won’t be competing again until Regionals on October 19th at Monfort Park. Look to see the Wolverines to be back to full strength and on a mission.
