Meet Recap

The Wolverines took on the states best on Saturday at the Colorado High School Cross Country State Championships. The competition took place under cool conditions at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs. This was by far the best running conditions for the venue since it started hosting the state meet.

The boys took to the course in the early afternoon to chase team and individual goals. After a blistering first mile the course tends to weed out the pretenders from the contenders in the second mile. Being mentally tough is important if an athlete wants to make a strong push over the final mile. That was showcased by multiple Frontier Academy student athletes on Saturday. The first to show poise, determination, and heart over the course and be the Wolverines first finisher was Senior Levi Chambers. Levi executed with excellence as he hung with the leaders throughout the race. Over the last mile he continued to move up and finished fourth overall in 16:25. This place earned him All-State honors and the highest finish ever on the boys side for a Frontier Academy athlete. Only six seconds behind Levi was Sophomore Jaden Davis who finished eleventh. Jaden continued his ascent as one of the best underclassman in the state with another wicked last mile where he significantly closed the gap. The future looks bright for him. The third runner for the Wolverines was Senior David Garcia finishing 26th in 17:14. His time was Colorado PR. In his first state meet David showed composure as he competed out on the course. The fourth Wolverine was Junior Jesse Hayward in 63rd and a time of 17:54. Rounding out the scoring as well as his high school cross country career was Senior Jayden Howell. Jayden finished in 82nd with a time of 18:05. However, this was by far Jayden’s best race of the season although the time might dictate that. Jayden closed over the last mile and helped the team secure a fifth place showing at state. Also running for the Wolverines were Junior Keegan Wiles in 18:17 (96th) and Freshman Baylor Lewis in 18:47 (129th). Both of these athletes will be back next year with a year of state experience under their belt. The team overall showed why they continue to be one of the best teams in the state year in and year out.

The girls had the task of racing in the last race of the day for any classification. Showing the same will and determination as the boys, the girls also executed a brilliant race plan. Through this commitment the girls finished 11th in team scoring on the day. The results was paced by Senior Hannah Ellis finishing fifth in 18:54. This marked the second year in a row Hannah earned All-State honors improving on her sixth place finish last year. Hannah has had an incredible journey over the last four years as she has battled through triumphs and tribulations while becoming the best girl cross country runner in school history. The second runner for the Wolverines was Junior Aleigha Street who finished 48th in 20:45. Aleigha was only two seconds off her PR and has raced extremely well the last two weeks. She has really made a turning point in her running career and it is exciting to see what that will bring in the future. In her second state meet Sophomore Sami Angus was the third Wolverine finishing 57th in 20:53. Junior Peyton Meyer showed strength finishing 100th in 21:53. Her will to compete and battle back is incredible as five weeks ago she wasn’t even running. The scoring was closed when Sophomore Julia Brown ran 22:05 and finished in 103rd. This was followed by Freshman Emma Murphy in 22:26 (112th) and Sophomore Sarah Ellis in 23:13 (129th). Sarah ran tough as she stepped into the position only finding out that morning she would be racing. Overall the girls team has battled through adversity as new runners have had to step into leading roles throughout the season. However, the future looks bright for the Wolverines as they lose only one girl on their state team to graduation.

With that the season comes to a close. What doesn’t come to a close though will be the friendships and memories that these team members and the rest of the team made over the last 21 weeks. These students athletes showed a lot of determination, commitment, character, and leadership as they grew both individually and as a team. As a coach I am blessed to be a small part of it.
