Boys Junior Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer · Varsity Falls to Colorado Academy 3-0

The Wolverines traveled to Denver to take on #3 seed Colorado Academy for the first round of the 2017 playoffs. In this matchup, it wasn’t just the opposing team that the Wolverines were battling but also the weather. The temperature dropped below freezing with gusts of wind and snow flurries for most of the game, but it made for a great playoff matchup.

The first 20 minutes of the game saw a lot of action but no scoring thanks to a solid performance by Freshman keeper Tanner Madden and the rest of the Wolverine defense. However, the Mustangs were able to sneak one through bringing the score to 1-0 at the end of the first half. In the second half we saw more of the same: great defensive effort and even more snow. However, the Mustangs were able to double their point total by putting two more goals on the board and held the Wolverines scoreless, despite strong offensive surges, binging the final score to 3-0.

This brought the Wolverines season to an end. They finished 8-8 and a 6-2 conference record. Despite the loss and elimination from the playoffs, this team put together a great season and brought a lot of pride to the program. It wouldn’t have been possible without the great group of seniors: Ben Hayes, Chandler Stolte, Hunter Phipps (C), Jacob Rau (C), Ayden Street, Robert Vickerman, Dan Karl, Cody Cure, and Caden Martin. It was an honor to have these young men on the team; their leadership, determination, and character will definitely be missed.

Meet Recap

The Frontier Academy Cross Country team was in action on Thursday at the 3A Region 4 Cross Country Regional. This meet determined who qualified for the state meet. Both teams went into the meet with the goal of winning regionals.

The boys were the first to set foot on accomplishing that goal. From the gun the boys ran aggressively up front setting the early pace. As the race unfolded the team continued to hold position. The first across the line for the Wolverines was Senior Levi Chambers finishing in second place overall in 16:25. Levi battled up front for the lead the entire race. One second behind Levi was Sophomore Jaden Davis running a PR of 16:26 and finishing third. Jaden was the fastest athlete in the field over the last mile closing the gap on the three leaders by 12 seconds. Third runner for the Wolverines and also earning All Region honors was Senior David Garcia finishing in 10th in 17:15. Next two across the line for the Wolverines and rounding out team scoring was Junior Jesse Hayward finishing 19th in 17:38 and Freshman Baylor Lewis finishing 21st in 17:43. Baylor’s time was a new PR and by far his best race of the season. Other Wolverines competing today were Junior Keegan Wiles (17:52), Senior Jayden Howell (18:00), Senior Brenden Worley (18:05), and Freshman Sylas Chambers (18:07). Sylas also finished the day with a new PR and helped pushed the team to success. To give perspective, Sylas would be a scoring runner all other teams in the region except one. When the point total was tallied the boys came out victorious with 55 points to win the Regional.

The girls race was a tour of force from the Wolverines. From the beginning they ran relentlessly with one goal in mind and that was to take the regional title. That goal was made easier with Senior Hannah Ellis obliterating the field and wining by 1:21 over second place. In doing so she ran 18:31 which breaks her old school record by one second. Pretty impressive work for running solo. Next runner for the Wolverines and having a breakout race was Freshman Audrynn Street who finished fifth overall in 20:25. Her time was a PR by over 2:00 and rates as the second fastest time for Frontier Academy freshman girls in school history. She was followed in by Sophomore Sami Angus finishing seventh in 20:39. Once place behind Sami was Junior Aleigha Street who ran a huge PR of 20:43. The effort was her first time under the 21:00 barrier. The scoring was completed when Junior Peyton Meyer finished in 17th place in 21:05. Even with Peyton still coming back from injury her time was still faster than her time on the same course last year. The sixth runner for the Wolverines was another Freshman, Emma Murphy finishing the course in 21:29 which was a PR of 40 seconds. The other Wolverines in action were Sophomore Julia Brown (21:44), Sophomore Sarah Ellis (22:37), and Junior Bailey England (22:38). Bailey’s time was a new PR for her as well. When the team score was tallied the girls had a measly 38 points compared to second place which had 113 points. Again the depth of the program was at work as Bailey finished before every teams fifth runner except one.

The Wolverines move on with the boys winning their sixth regional title in a row and the girls winning their fifth title in six years. It is one more goal the team can check off that they wanted to accomplish this season. Next up is the state meet next Saturday at Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs. The boys will run at 12:40 p.m. and the girls will run at 2:00 p.m.

Boys Junior Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer · Varsity Takes Down Valley

Last night the Wolverines traveled to take on the Valley Vikings in a conference showdown. The last meeting between the two teams ended with a 2-1 victory for the Wolverines and this game was just as tight. The first half saw a lot of action from both teams. Valley strikes first to take an early lead, but sophomore Max Silva did not let that lead stay long as he got things rolling for Frontier with a goal of his own. Valley took the lead once again with a goal of their own and then it was answered by Frontier’s Robert Vickerman as he put another goal on the board with a successful penalty shot bringing the score to 2-2 at half. The second half saw only one goal from Robert Vickerman that put the Wolverines up 3-2 and that would end up being the final score as Frontier was able to hold the Vikings scoreless in the second half.

The win brings Frontier to 7-7 (5-2) and they will look to improve on that as they play their last regular season game against Estes Park on Thursday.
