On a day that felt more like the middle of July then the middle of September the Wolverines competed in their home invite. With the heat it was a good reminder that focus is on competing and not the time. The day was centered on giving different athletes the opportunity to be the teams scoring varsity.
The girls began the competition around Monfort Park. The Wolverines were led by Sophomore Emma Murphy setting the tone with a 34th place finish in 23:45. Murphy is getting stronger by the week as she runs more confidently. Not far behind was Junior Therali Merry and Senior Anna Stoltz running as the Wolverines 2nd and 3rd runners. Bouncing back this week with a great race was Junior Kaylee Howell. Not happy about her last race she came back determined and it showed out on the race course. The final scoring runner for the Wolverines was Senior Izzy Ramirez. When the points were tallied the girls managed a seventh place finish.
The boys race followed and setting the early pace up front was Junior Jaden Davis. His effort earned him a 6th place finish. Coming in second for the team and having a great run was Sophomore Seth Gutierrez. Gutierrez is one of a few runners who is working for the final varsity spots. His consistency is vital to keeping the middle group of boys continuing to push forward. Having another great race was Freshman Noah Baca. He continues to drop time and walked away with a new PR of 19:29. Another Freshman on the rise, Cade Branum, rounded out team scoring for the boys with his finish. His finish helped lead the boys to a sixth place showing.
The Wolverines have a quick turnaround with the City Meet this coming Wednesday at Josephine Jones park.
